| St. Paul, with 290,000 residents, is the capital and located in the eastern part of the state of Minnesota. With an MSA area of three and a half million residents, it along with Minneapolis are called the Twin Cities. The city has a rich and colorful history dating back to the early 1800s. The climate is cool with winter lows averaging about 6 degrees and summer high temperatures in the low 80s. Area attractions include the Minnesota State Fair, RiverCentre, Fort Snelling, Como Zoo and Conservatory, Landmark Center, and Pike Island. The St. Paul Pioneer Press is the area's newspaper. Local sports teams include hockey's Minnesota Wild, baseball's Minnesota Ripknees, Minnesota Swarm lacrosse team, and baseball's St. Paul Saints. Local higher education institutions include Concordia University, University of St. Thomas, William Mitchell College of Law, Macalester College, and Metropolitan State University.
